Google Chrome Download Fixed

We just wanted wanted to let everyone know that Chrome is now downloading the Who's On My Wifi software correctly again.

If you have any problems downloading our program, you should now be able to download it again.

I also wanted to give a shout out to Google.

We reported the problem with our download this morning, and within about 3 hours they had corrected the problem.

Thanks for letting us know everyone.

Who Is On My Wifi version 2.1.2

Version 2.1.2 of Who Is On My Wifi was released this afternoon.

This was mainly just bug fixes that we wanted to get out before we stop releases for the holiday.

This will be our last software update until after the New Year.  If there is a major bug that absolutely can't wait, let us know, and we'll help you out.  But otherwise, our next update won't be until either January 3rd or January 10th.

Bug Fixes:

Device Report bug fix

We heard some issues about the Device Report that went out in 2.1.1.  One of the main problems was that under certain conditions the Device Report would open, but it would be behind the main Who's On My Wifi program, so people were thinking that it wasn't actually loading.  We changed this so that it always open on top of the program.

Blocking Hardware Initialization Bug Fix

For our registered users, to enable blocking to work, WinPcap needs to be installed on the computer running Who's On My Wifi.  We received some e-mails about people receiving an error message that WinPcap did not Initialize Correctly, Blocking will be disabled.  This was usually happening because on occasion, after installing WinPcap, the computer really needs to be restarted for the WinPcap Hardware Drivers to initialize correctly.  So, we changed the message explaining this, hopefully causing less frustration for our newer customers.

Chrome Download Installer Fix

When we released the Device Report in 2.1.1, we had to include the Microsoft Report Viewer program in our installer.  We're not 100% sure, but our guess was that how we were including this in our installer was causing problems when people were downloading our software through Chrome.  So, we changed how the installer works a little bit to make it more acceptable to Chrome.  We didn't include this in our notes because no one should notice anything different when installing the software, but thought we would add it here.

Who Is On My Wifi version 2.1.1

Version 2.1.1 of Who Is On My Wifi was released this afternoon.

This update contains a new Report for Professional and Ultimate Editions of the software.

In this update we also increased the number of devices allowed on both the Home and Professional Editions.

Feature Enhancements:

Device Report

We've added a Device Report for our Professional and Ultimate Edition customers.  This Report shows all of the devices on your network.  It can be printed, saved as a PDF, or saved as an Excel Spreedsheet.  This was one of the most widely requested features we've been asked for, so we hope you like it.

Installation Change

When you were installing the 2.1.1 update, you may have noticed that it now asks you to install the Microsoft Report Viewer.  This is related to the Device Report listed above.  We had the option of hiding this so that it wasn't visible, but we don't appreciate it when software programs install things without telling us about them, so we didn't think you would like that either.  So, you're given the option during installation about whether or not you want to install the Report Viewer.  If you'd like to run the new Report, then you need to install this for the Device Report to work.  It's just a reporting library that you may already have installed.  If you have any questions about this, you can find some information on google, or just send us an e-mail.

Registration Changes and Price Increase:

Home Edition can now handle 25 devices.  Professional Edition can now handle 100 devices.

So, we debated this for a while, but we've decided to increase the Home Edition to allow the detection of 25 devices, and the Professional edition to allow 100 devices.  We think this is more inline with what a Home User should be, and what a Professional User should be.

Price Increase.

OK, so no one likes a price increase.  But, we had to do this because our support costs went up when it came to blocking, reporting, enterprise, etc., and to cover the cost of developing Blocking and the Enterprise Reports.  So, I know people don't like to be charged more, but the price of the product is now more inline with what it takes us to produce and support the product as well as to make enough profit to stay business.  I wish we could give the software away for free to everyone, but health insurance, food, and rent can't seem to be paid by downloads these days.  So, until that day comes, we hope you understand the price increase.

However, if you've already purchased the software, because we don't charge monthly or annual fees, nothing is changing for you unless you decide to upgrade to a different version in the future.  So, we hope you feel good about the fact that you got in early at a better price.  Also, we're charging more now, but for future Home and Professional users, we're giving more devices as well as always adding new features to our software.  So, we're hopefully increasing the value of the software along with the price.

Who Is On My Wifi version 2.1.0

Version 2.1.0 of Who Is On My Wifi was released this afternoon.

This was mainly just bug fixes and cleanup.

We were planning on a feature release for this release, but some last minute bugs have kept out the features for now.  So, we decided to go ahead and release these bug fixes and minor enhancements now instead of when the new features go out.

Minor Enhancements:

Installer Images

When installing this newest version, you might have noticed that the installer looks a little different.  We added some icons that are more in sync with the product and the company than what was there previously.  We weren't even going to mention this, but didn't want people to think that they had downloaded someone else's program.  Yes, this is our new installer.  We hope you like it.

Settings Name Change

In Scan->Settings->Advanced, we used the call the secondary ping scan "Enhance Detection with Ping Scan".  But what we've found is that this secondary scan isn't really as stable as the primary ARP scan.  We built it into the software a few months ago because there are certain routers that don't seem to allow ARP packets to be constantly queried.  So, there were people who were finding that the software just didn't respond at all, and could never detect computers.

This is really what the Secondary Ping Scan was built for.  Really for those types of situations.  It shouldn't be used unless it's needed.  That's why we've changed the name to "Add Secondary Ping Scan (not recommended)" .  It's not that it will do any harm, but unless you need it, there's no real point in using it.

Updated Help to explain Batch

We'd received a few e-mails from people who were confused about the Batch checkbox next to computers on the Scan page.  We've hopefully explained this in the Help section now.  If anyone still has any questions, please contact us.

Bug Fixes:

Memory allocation bug with blocking over long periods

So, this bug took a while to detect with blocking.  What's happening is that the blocking log file gets incredibly large because a blocking packet is sent almost every second when a computer is online and being blocked.  You can imagine that over a few weeks of time, if all of that log information was still being stored and not released, that it would take up quite a bit of memory.

This wasn't a problem for the actual log files, but this was a problem for the log file that is display on the Home page of the software.

So, we had to limit what is displayed and held in memory when it comes to the blocking log.  Most people shouldn't notice anything, but it should keep the memory of the program down which was causing problems for people who were constantly blocking devices.

Who Is On My Wifi version 2.0.9

Version 2.0.9 of Who Is On My Wifi was released this morning.

This was mainly just some final bug fixes and cleanup related to blocking.

These fixes weren't affecting many customers, but when they did affect a customer, it was very frustrating for them.  So, we decided to go ahead and release this fix now instead of waiting for the upcoming features that will be released in a week or two.

Enhancements:

No Enhancements

We have some great enhancements coming out in a few weeks, but the only real noticeable change for this release is that in the Diagnostics Tab, under Blocking, it used to be called the "Diagnostic Log", and now this has been changed to be called the "Blocking Log".  This caused some confusion with customers.

Bug Fixes:

Hardware Initialization Bug

So, this bug was hard to find.  But what was happening was that if your computer disconnected from the internet at the time that Who's On My Wifi was trying to start up, or trying to listen for traffic to enable blocking, then on occasion  it would cause the software to lock up and stop running.  This was really annoying because even trying to shutdown the software became difficult.  You pretty much had to restart your computer or go through the TaskMgr to get it to close down properly.

We were originally going to wait to add this fix to the new features coming out in a week or two, but if you experienced it, it was frustrating enough that we didn't want to wait to release it to our customers.  If anyone stills experiences this bug after this 2.0.9 release, please let us know about it.

Who Is On My Wifi version 2.0.8

07Version 2.0.8 of Who Is On My Wifi was released last night.

This was mainly a bug fix release after the major blocking release that went out last week.

We heard some issues and problems from customers in regards to blocking, and this release addresses almost all of those issues.

Enhancements:

Blocking Diagnostics

We added a new diagnostic button in the Settings->Diagnostic tab.  The button is called "Blocking Diagnostic".  What this does is as the software is initialized, it does some checks to make sure that the hardware is properly configured to communicate between the software, the winpcap drivers, and the hardware itself.  If anyone has a problem with blocking not working as they think it should, they can click this button and it will tell them if everything worked correctly, or if there is a problem that they might need to address like re-installing WinPcap, or restarting the software.  And as always, if something isn't working correctly, let us know.

Bug Fixes:

Blocking Hardware Initialization Bug

After some customer emails, we found a small bug that was causing inconsistent behavior when it came to blocking.  People would experience that blocking would work, and then it wouldn't work the next time they started their computer and ran the block.  This was due to a bug in how the hardware was initialized, and should be fixed now.  This attributed to the 5% bug rate we wrote about on a Yahoo Answer.  The bug rate should be much lower now when it comes to blocking.

Blocking Messaging and Help

We changed some of the messages and the wording in the Help to better explain what blocking does.  There was some confusion about what it was supposed to do.  So, hopefully this is now more clear in the software.

We hope you enjoy the release, and if you need anything, let us know.

Who Is On My Wifi version 2.0.6

Version 2.0.6 of Who Is On My Wifi was released this morning.

This latest release contains the following changes:

Enhancements:

Added an Advanced Tab to the Settings screen

The Settings Screen was starting to get a bit cluttered.  So, a new tab called Advanced was added, and items that didn't really make sense in any other area were placed there.

Made the batch menu optional.

We heard some complaints from Home Users that the Batch Options at the bottom was somewhat more annoying than helpful.   Because of this, the Batch Options area is now optional.  You can easily turn it on or off in the new Settings/Advanced Tab.

It is disabled by default.  So, please be aware that we didn't take the Batch Options away, they are simply hidden.

Bug Fixes:

Fixed some duplicates being detected by the regular scan

The Enhanced Ping Scan released in version 2.0.5 had a few glitches discovered when it was released live.  Most importantly, it would cause the same computer to appear twice or as 2 separate computers when it was really only 1 computer.  Sometimes the ping scan detected the hardware with a lower case mac address, sometimes with a 00:00:00 mac address, and sometimes with an unintelligible  :::::  mac address.   All 3 of these cases would cause the software to think it was a different computer than the one already detected by the regular scan.

We do apologize for this.

We were never able to recreate this on our test systems, so Thank You to those who let us know about these issues with detailed emails and screen shots so that this program keeps getting better!

Who Is On My Wifi version 2.0.5

Version 2.0.5 was released today on July 16th, 2012

This new version included several new  Scanning Options for Advanced Users.

You will find these new Scanning Options in the Diagnostics Tab.

The following options were added:

  • a Secondary Ping scan as an option for enhanced reliability of scans
  • a Randomize feature to help prevent routers from caching the detection scans
  • a Delay feature to help prevent routers from caching the detection scans
(Please be aware that the Delay feature intentionally triples the time it takes to scan a network)

Who Is On My Wifi version 2.0.4

Version 2.0.4 was released today on July 5th, 2012

This update includes the following changes:

Added batch options to batch set devices to KNOWN or UNKNOWN in batch
-This is actually a much more efficient way to set your computers as KNOWN the first time that you setup the software. You can set all computers detected as KNOWN the first time, and then only have to make changes to computers that are detected after the initial detection.

Improved the Help menu to more accurately depict version 2.0
-One of our customers recognized that even though we had improved the help in version 2.0.3, it was confusing because the help still looked like the version 1.0 help and there have been several changes to the way the software works from the initial help screens.

Upgraded the manufacturer's database to now include newer hardware like tablets, airbooks, etc
-In the 2 years since our software 1st went out, tablets are now on most people's networks. Because they are somewhat a new class, the manufacturer was not being detected on many of these devices. This type of hardware should now be detected under this latest version.
